Skip NYC traffic: Archer unveils 15-min air taxi rides to airports

If you’ve ever found yourself staring at the clock in a yellow cab, stuck in gridlock en route to JFK or LaGuardia, Archer Aviation may have your dream solution: air taxis that can whisk you from Manhattan to the airport in just 5 to 15 minutes. Yes, minutes.

In a fresh announcement that has big-city commuters buzzing, Archer has unveiled its vision for a futuristic air taxi network in New York City — powered by its sleek, all-electric Midnight aircraft. And they’re not going it alone. Archer is teaming up with United Airlines to bring this ambitious concept to life.

The idea is simple: use existing helipads and airport spaces (called “vertiports”) to launch a fleet of electric air taxis that soar above the traffic mess below. Instead of spending an hour (or two) on the road, passengers could hop into Midnight and be at the airport faster than it takes to grab a coffee and bagel.

Midnight isn’t just any flying machine. This electric air taxi seats four passengers plus a pilot and was designed to be ultra-quiet and sustainable. No noisy blades overhead. No gas guzzling. Just a smooth, swift ride above the chaos.

Adam Goldstein, CEO and Founder of Archer, sums it up perfectly: “The drive from Manhattan to any of the city’s three major airports can be painful. We want to change that by offering trips that take mere minutes.”

Midnight is built in the US, with manufacturing sites in California and Georgia. It features 12 engines and propellers and layers of backup systems — aiming for airline-level safety. And with FAA Part 135 certification already secured in 2024, Archer is one big step closer to liftoff.

But there’s still one major hurdle: FAA Type Certification for the aircraft itself. Once that’s in the bag, Archer plans to begin operations, starting in — you guessed it — New York.

United Airlines has been backing Archer from the start. They’ve already ordered a fleet of Midnight aircraft and are working closely with Archer to build the real estate, airspace plans, and safety systems needed to run a sky-high shuttle service.

Andrew Chang, who heads United Airlines Ventures, stresses this partnership is about “reimagining the future of air travel.” That includes making sure infrastructure and protocols are in place to bring flying taxis to the masses.

Archer is working with several big-name partners — including Atlantic Aviation, Signature Aviation, Skyports, Modern Aviation, and Air Pegasus — to get vertiports and charging infrastructure ready.

And this isn’t Archer’s first rodeo. The company has already announced similar air taxi networks in Los Angeles and San Francisco. But with its iconic skyline, packed streets, and helicopter-friendly regulations, New York might just be the perfect place to launch the next era of city travel.

City officials also seem on board. The NYC Economic Development Corporation said this marks a new chapter in sustainable urban air travel. And the Port Authority is actively exploring how to make it all work safely and efficiently across the region.

If things go according to plan, you may soon be skipping traffic and gliding over the Hudson in a quiet, zero-emissions air taxi. Rush hour, reimagined.
